Angler Survey of Worcester Lakes & Ponds

Where do you Fish in Worcester, the answers are above!

The Lake Quinsigamond, Indian Lake, and Coes Pond Watershed Associations worked with Worcester Lakes and Ponds program to engage WPI students on developing a survey on fishing in Worcester lakes.

Visit our dropbox to watch the WPI zoom student presentation or view the results of the survey. We developed the survey to assist our efforts in securing a grant from the state to expand our education on fishing in and around Worcester.  Although we were unsuccessful in our attempt for a state grant in fiscal year FY21, we will apply again for FY22.

Anyone interested helping with this project, especially people who currently fish in the area, please contact us at info@lqwa.org

Volunteers Needed to Collect Water Samples

The Worcester Cyanobacteria Monitoring Collaborative (WCMC) is a group of citizen science volunteers that are working to better understand the diversity of algae and cyanobacteria in Worcester’s lakes and ponds.

Summer 2020 will be the third year of sample collection as part of the Collaborative organized by Worcester DPW’s Lakes and Ponds Program. Lake residents and volunteers the Cronin Family and Mike Liberty have been collecting monthly samples June to Sept from three locations in Lake Quinsigamond. The samples are taken to the Blackstone Heritage Corridor Visitor Center in Worcester and are placed under a microscope for algae identificaiton. To date only occassional cyanobacteria cells have been observed in water from Lake Quinsig.

We would like to collect samples from Flint Pond and Newton Pond but need volunteers to cover them. It only takes a couple hours per month and hey, lets be real, you are on the water anyway!  If you are interested in training to collect samples and identify algae under the microscope, or just learn more about the project, contact us at info@LQWA.org or Burmeisterj@worcesterma.gov.
